Re-highlighting faded lettering

The name is still cut into the stone. Re-highlighting is what makes it readable from the path again.

Re-highlighting faded lettering

What the work involves

Lettering on a granite marker is filled with monument enamel, not carved and left bare. That paint is what gives the name its contrast. Under Florida sun the enamel chalks, lifts at the edges and eventually washes out of the grooves entirely, and a stone that reads perfectly at arm's length becomes unreadable from ten feet away.

Re-highlighting is slow, careful work. The grooves are cleaned out, the surrounding face is masked, and the enamel is laid in by hand, letter by letter, then cut back so the edges are crisp rather than bled. Borders, emblems, military insignia and etched graphics are all done the same way.

Because the work sits outdoors in Florida weather, we do not promise a lifetime on paint. What we promise is that it is laid properly, in monument grade enamel rather than a hardware store substitute, and that you see photographs before we leave.

Questions families ask

How long does re-highlighting last?

It depends entirely on sun, shade and sprinkler exposure. We will not put a number on it, because anyone who does is guessing. What we can say is that properly laid monument enamel outlasts a quick touch up by years.

Can you match an unusual colour?

Usually. Send a photograph with the quote request and we will tell you honestly whether we can match it or whether the closest available is a near miss.

Do I need cleaning as well?

The stone has to be clean before paint goes anywhere near it, so cleaning is part of the re-highlight visit rather than an extra.
